As history unbelievably repeats itself today I think it’s worth remembering that politics and power aside, it takes incredible strength for a woman to stand up in front of congress and make her story heard. Anita Hill’s life, I would argue, was never the same after she testified before Congress but she completely changed the conversation about workplace environments for women there after. In 2011 I had the honor of photographing Anita Hill for the @nytimes and I’m grateful for that opportunity to get to know her, even for a moment, as a person standing in front of me apart from history, news, and politics.

All the political nonsense these days makes me think of the integrity of Boston’s former mayor of 21 years, Thomas Menino. I got the opportunity to photograph him for the @nytimes before he passed. His leg was hurting him, and I think he was fully aware of the optics of a politician sitting in a photograph,but also knew his time as a politician was coming to an end, and let me do it anyway. My favorite part of the shoot was when he walked on set, saw the seamless, and said “oooh a ski slope!” My photographer friends will get that one.
